Northwest Shoals Community College is offering the Summer Jump Start Program for 2010 graduating seniors.  This is a scholarship for one free summer class.  Apply on-line for the 2009-2010 FAFSA and apply for admission to NWSCC.  Call 331-5364 for further assistance.

Martin Luther King Scholarship applications are now available in guidance.  Applications include two letters of recommendation from a principal, teacher, counselor, pastor, or community leader, a resume, a wallet-size photo, and a transcript.  Completed applications should be returned to the guidance department before March 15.

The Red Cross Club and Spanish Club are selling Hope for Haiti bracelets for $1 each.  To purchase a bracelet, see Mrs. Boddie, Mrs. Perry, or Qi Li Huang.

Any 11th or 12th grader who would like to enter the District Exchange Club Oratorical Essay Contest needs to pick up an application in guidance and return the application and essay to Mrs. Riser by March 29 to be reviewed by a committee.

Any senior who would like to be considered for the Accepting the Challenge of Excellence Award needs to pick up an application in guidance and return it to Mrs. Riser by March 29 to be reviewed by a scholarship committee.

Jacksonville State University will host Spring Preview Day for high school students and their families on Saturday, March 27.  Activities begin at 9:30 a.m.  For more information, call 1-800-231-5291, option 1 or 256-782-5268.

          Multicultural Club has extended its deadline for the Hope for Haiti fundraiser.  Donate money to your first period teachers.  Every cent counts!!  Class with the highest donations will win a bag of candy and brownies.

          Cheerleader tryouts for the Varsity Squad will be held during the week of April 5 – April 9.  All students interested in trying out need to pick up an information packet in the main office or in Ms. Beumer’s classroom.  There will be a MANDATORY meeting on Tuesday, March 15, at 3:10 p.m. in Ms.

Beumer’s room to discuss the tryout process, eligibility, and answer any questions.  YOU MUST ATTEND THIS MEETING.  If you have a conflict, please see Ms. Beumer AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Thanks.

The National Honor Society is sponsoring a project to help with Haiti relief.  Please bring your old t-shirts to the commons area during one of the three lunch periods today through TODAY, March 10.  There is a box set up in the commons for the t-shirts. 

          The Florence Falcon Orchestra Department invites you to go eat all the pancakes you desire this Saturday, March 13, at Applebee’s Restaurant from 8:00 until 10:00 a.m.  Tickets – only $5!

The Physics Six Flags trip will be April 23.  The cost is $76.  This includes tickets, bus, and lunch.  We will leave at 5:00 a.m. and return at 10:00 p.m.  Sign up with Mrs. Thompson immediately to reserve your seat.  There are 50 seats. 

There will be a mandatory meeting of all girls wanting to try out for majorette, dance line, and color guard for the FHS “Big Blue” Falcon Band on Tuesday, March 16, at 3:30 p.m. in the commons.

Youth Leadership Shoals applications are available with Mrs. Chappell in guidance.  This program is for next year’s high school juniors and is provided through the Shoals Chamber of Commerce.  The deadline for applications to be received by the Chamber is April 9 at 5:00 p.m.

SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS (who did not order rings last year):  Your Jostens’ representatives, Billy and Taylor Walker, will be here Thursday, March 18, to take your class ring orders.  Orders will be taken from 10:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the FHS commons.  Please remember to bring your $90, $65, or $50 deposit. 

SENIORS:  You may pick up your caps & gowns, graduation announcements, and other items next Thursday, March 18, from the Jostens’ representatives.  They will be in the commons from 10:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.  PLEASE PICK UP THESE ITEMS AS IT WILL BE HIS LAST DATE TO DELIVER THEM.

The final ASMA of the year will be held Thursday, March 11, at 7:10 a.m. in the math department.     

 

New Announcements

Spring pictures will be made Wednesday, March 17, during history classes.  Order envelopes will be given out on Friday, March 12.  Students not enrolled in an FHS history class may have their photo made during lunch.  Extra order forms will be available in the school office.   

 

          Specification: Logos may be no larger than 2” by 3” except school logos.

            Items NOT Allowed: Oversized clothing or clothing that is too tight.

          Career Tech 10th grade students:  Due to AHSGE, we have only a little time to complete the NWSCC Youth Summit information.  THERE ARE NEW GUIDELINES FOR ATTENDANCE:  1) Only C/T 10th graders who have not been in ISS for the 2009-2010 school year may attend the summit.  2) ALL NWSCC required Reality Check Fun paperwork must be turned in with permission slip or you will not be placed on the bus list – no exceptions.  3) Permission slips and reality checkbooks due all at once.  Final day to turn these in is TODAY, March 9.  Stop by Ms. Dudley’s office to pick up packets.   

          There will be an FBLA meeting Wednesday, March 10, at 7:30 a.m. in Mrs. Davis’ room 52.  Plans for the Special Olympics will be discussed and t-shirt orders/money will be taken at this meeting.  T-shirt prices are $6.00, xx size $7.50, and xxx size $8.00.   The Special Olympics will be April 23.

Congratulations to the girls’ soccer team for winning the Indian Classic Soccer Tournament over the weekend.  Hope Garner led the defense earning her the MVP of the tournament.  Michaelann Rodriguez scored 5 goals earning her the Golden Boot of the tournament.  All the girls put in a solid performance with Hope Garner, Mady St. John, Jessica Wear, Katherine Rylant, and Rachael Nowack all scoring a goal each.  Great job girls!

Savannah College of Art & Design will be at Westin Huntsville at 6800 Governors West Road, NW, at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 6.  Students who are interested in attending SCAD are urged to visit with representatives from that school.

During AHSGE week, no FHS students will go to the FFC for the first three periods of each day.  Also, no FFC students will come to FHS for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd periods.  FHS students who normally go to FFC will report to the auditorium.  Also, no purses or bags of any type will be allowed in to the testing area.  All items must be stored in lockers.

          Each day the first 25 students to arrive for the 7:00 A.M. review in the dome will receive free breakfast and all attendees will have their name placed in a drawing for movie bucks.

          Each day all students who participate in the testing will have their names placed in a drawing for a $25.00 gift certificate.

      

 

          Every student having a 100% participation rate in testing (this means the student attends each day he/she is scheduled to test) will have their name placed in a drawing for a $100.00 gift certificate to be given at the end of testing. 

          Exciting news from the FHS yearbook staff:  the 2009 edition of the yearbook earned first place in the state for yearbook design and was awarded an overall Superior rating Friday at the Alabama Scholastic Press Association’s State Convention in Tuscaloosa.  In individual competition, Leigh Rusevlyan won 3rd place in the state for News Writing.

          Career Tech 10th grade students:  Please hurry.  Due to AHSGE, we have only a little time to complete the NWSCC Youth Summit information that was just received.  THERE ARE NEW GUIDELINES FOR ATTENDANCE:  1) Only C/T 10th graders who have not been in ISS for the 2009-2010 school year may attend the summit.  2) ALL NWSCC required Reality Check Fun paperwork must be turned in with permission slip or you will not be placed on the bus list – no exceptions.  3) Permission slips and reality checkbooks due all at once.  Final day to turn these in is Tuesday, March 9.  You may stop by Ms. Dudley’s office to pick up packets.

Each day the first 25 students to arrive for the 7:00 A.M. review in the dome will receive free breakfast and all attendees will have their name placed in a drawing for movie bucks.

Syracuse University in New York has 10 full rides for African American Men & Women interested in studying architecture.  Mark Robbins, Dean of Syracuse University’s School of Architecture, is desperately seeking young men and women of color interested in pursuing a 5-year professional degree in architecture.  Call 315-443-2256.
