FHS Theatre Department Hosts State Festival
FHS Students Bring Home Awards |
|
This weekend Florence High School School hosted the
Alabama State Thespian Festival. Around 600 students from all over
the state participated in individual competitions, play competitions,
and over 40 workshops.
The Florence Falcon Theatre Department represented the Florence City
School System to fullest extent by receiving many accolades.
Solo Acting Female- Christie Connolly-3rd Place
Duet Acting Dramatic- Christie Connolly and Jamie Connolly- 3rd Place
Duet Acting Comedic- Diana Bates and Candace Williamson- 2nd Place

The team of administrators of Florence High School and Florence Freshman
Center were named the Alabama Educational Theatre Association
Administrators of the Year.

Senior Caps and Gowns Delivery
Billy Walker with Jostens will
be on campus March 8 to deliver caps and gowns. He will be in
the commons/cafeteria area during 4th, 5th, and 6th periods.

AHSGE to be Administered March 1-5
|
The Spring Test administration for the Alabama High School Graduation
Exam is scheduled for March 1-5. Below are the dates for each
section of the test:
Monday, March 1--Math Tuesday, March
2--Reading Wednesday, March 3--Language Thursday, March 4--Social
Studies Friday, March 5--Science
A morning blitz/study session
will be held each morning beginning at 7:00 A.M. for that day's exam.
In addition, an afternoon session for the math portion will be held
on Friday, February 26 during 7th and 8th periods.
Any
student who has questions concerning the AHSGE should check with his or
her counselor.

Carter Selected as Secondary Teacher
of the Year
Congratulations to the following teachers who
have earned the title of System wide Teachers of the Year for
Florence City Schools:

Career and Technical Education Teacher at Florence High School
These teachers will represent Florence City
Schools at the next level of competition for Statewide Teacher of
the Year.

National Merit Scholarship and AP Scholars Recognition Program -2009-10
Semi-Finalists Bartmess, Cleveland, and Reese Qualify as
Finalists
Over 1.5 million students
took the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
(PSAT/NMSQT) last October and entered the National Merit Program, a
nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by National
Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Some 16,000 of those high performers were recently designated
Semi-finalists.
Only Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the Merit
Scholarship competition and advance to Finalist standing by meeting a
number of additional requirements.
Florence High School is proud to announce our 2009 National Merit

The National Merit Scholarship Program has now determined
that these three students are Finalists in the 2010 Competition for
National Merit Scholarships.
Florence High School
would also like to recognize 2009 Commended Students for their
exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding
performance on the PSAT. Commended Students placed among the top 5
percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT. They are:

The 2009 National
Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) is recognizing nearly 5,000 students
selected forma pool of over 200,000 students who took the 2008 PSAT.
Students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are designated as Scholars.

Twenty students at
Florence High School have earned AP Scholars Awards in recognition of
their exceptional achievement on AP exams. About 18 percent of the 1.6
million students worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently
high level to earn an AP Scholar Award.
One student qualified for
the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher
on a five-point scale on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on
eight or more of these exams. This student is a 2009 graduate,
Obianujunwa Anakwenze.
5 students qualified for
the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at
least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or
more of these exams. These students are 2009 graduates
Obianujunwa Anakwenze, Andrew Husted, Jane Locker, and Addison Osbirn.
2 students qualified for
the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least
3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of
these exams. These students are

Carl Parasaliti,
Jr., son of Carl Parasiliti, Sr. and Judy Parasaliti
13 students qualified for
the AP Scholars Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades
of 3 or higher. These AP scholars include 2009 graduates Grace
Beer, Mary Cleveland, Richard Curtis, Elton Darby, Jacob Gattman, Dylan
Kelly, Courtney Leyde, Alex Lindley, and Alex Yu.

recipients at Florence High School, six are seniors : Stuart
Bartmess, Shao-yu Chen, Christie Connolly, Lauren Cox, Pruitt Holcombe,
and Carl Parasaliti. These students have at least one more year
in which to complete college-level work and possibly earn a higher level
AP Scholar Award.

FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP TO BE HELD
|
A financial aid workshop for seniors and their parents will be held on
Thursday, February 25 at 6:00 P.M. in the commons of FHS. Parents
should bring their completed 2009 Income Tax returns with them if they
wish help in filling out the FAFSA form with the aid of financial
counselors from local institutions. FAFSA is a program
administered by the federal government to assist students financially
with college expenses.

Association awarded the 2009 edition of the FHS yearbook,

CULINARY STUDENT ACCEPTED AT JOHNSON
AND WALES
Jac St. John
has been accepted into the Culinary Program at Johnson and Wales,
and has Ben awarded $26,000 in scholarships over the next four
years. Jac plans to attend the Johnson and Wales campus in
Charlotte, North Carolina. This is exciting news for the
Culinary Program at FHS.

Club Essay Contest in grades 10-12.

prize money and will read their essay at the Kiwanis Club luncheon on

FHS Theatre Students Excel at
Trumbauer
The Florence Falcon Theatre students attended the 69th Annual Walter
Trumbauer State Competition this past weekend, December 4 and 5.
These students competed with 1,100 other students in 1,230 events in a
packed weekend of theatre, and brought home many awards. Students will
now begin to focus on the Alabama State Thespian Festival which will be
held Feb. 26th-28th at Florence High School. Being selected to host the
event is an honor in itself.

National Honor Society
National Honor Society applications are available in room 2. Any junior
or senior who has a 90 cumulative average is encouraged to apply for
membership. Applicants must pick up a copy of the NHS bylaws with the
application. Completed applications must be turned in to Mrs. Musgrove
by Thursday, October 15, at 3:30 p.m. They will not be accepted
late.

FHS STUDENT AWARDED SAM'S
CLUB GRANT
Welcome
to the Florence High School - Home of the Falcons
Yova Tsoncheva,
Culinary Arts III student at Florence High School, has just received
notice of being awarded a $5,000.00 Sam's Club Grant. The proposal was
written and submitted by Wanda Riser, Guidance Counselor and Yova. The
plan was to create an herb garden for the Culinary Arts Program at
Florence High School.
Ms. Carter
assisted Yova in determining the needs for the herb garden.

Spring Dual Enrollment Registration
The UNA spring schedule is available at
https://selfserve.una.edu. 11th grade students who are
interested in registering for Dual Enrollment classes in the spring need
to see Ms. Lovelace in guidance to complete Dual Enrollment contracts.
Likewise, 12th grade students need to see Ms. Riser. The
deadline for submitting Dual Enrollment contracts to the counselors is
November 1. No application will be accepted after that date.
