Welcome to Florence High School. We are very excited about our ability to communicate with the world! We hope that it will provide a glimpse of the wonderful things that are going on within the halls and arenas of FHS. Please take time to explore our web page and see just how great it is to be a Falcon at Florence High School!

Florence High School has approximately 960 students in grades 10-12.  Our student body’s ethnic demographics are sixty-six percent White, thirty-two percent Black, one percent Asian and one percent Hispanic.  Every year varies but we currently have nine foreign exchange students.

Prom Court 2008 Announced

The following students have been selected by the Senior Class for 2008 Prom Court:

Prom Court resumes will be posted in the ticket area of the commons on Monday, May 5.  Juniors and seniors will vote on Mr. and Miss FHS in homeroom to be held at the beginning of third period on Monday, May 12.  The court will  be presented at 10:00 P.M. the night of the prom, May 16, at the coliseum.  Mr. and Ms. FHS will be announced at the end of the presentation of the court.


 

FHS Students Win Writing Award

Four Florence High School students have been selected among ten finalists in Alabama Shakespeare Festival's 2008 Southern Young Writers Project competition.  These students of Darlene Freemon's creative writing class are:  Emily Jones, Andrew Husted, Mary Margaret Locker, and Ryan Groch.  Each won the award for a play submitted to the competition. 

The honor is spectacular in that four of the ten finalists are from FHS out of over 800 entrants.  Congratulations to Mrs. Freemon and these students.


 

American Chemical Society Announces Chemistry Awards

At the Fifty-Second Annual Chemistry Awards Banquet held recently, Stuart Bartmess won first place for the Franklin A. Lenfesty Award, Shao-Yo Chen, second place in the same category, and Courtney Leyde, third place.  Congratulations to these students and to their teachers Mrs. Kanipe and Mrs. Williams.

At the same banquet Mrs. Linda Kanipe, FHS science teacher extraordinaire was named  teacher of the year.  Way to go, Mrs. Kanipe.


 

Career Tech to Offer "Powder Puff" Class This Summer

There will be a  “Powder Puff” class At 

 Florence High School this summer.   
 June 16-19 2008, 9:00am-11:00am
 This class will be for females’ grades 9-12.  The cost will be $10.00
 
 Topics that will be covered:

How to navigate an owners manual.

 

The importance of preventative maintenance.

 

The procedure for taking your car in for repairs.

 

How to safely check under the hood fluid levels.

 

How to safely change a flat tire.

 

How to safely change oil & Filter.

 

How to safely jump start an engine that has a dead battery.

A student who failed two subjects in 2007-08 must attend summer school and successfully complete it in order to move to the next grade. 

NOTE:  Because of the new state requirement for all students in grades 9-12 to earn at least one unit in Physical Education, we are considering the offering of Physical Education in summer school if as many as 20 students enroll.

Student of the Week and Staff Member of the Month

This year, under the direction of Mrs. Lynne Hice, assistant principal, FHS has instituted a "Student of the Week" program.  Nominated by their teachers, these students have shown marked improvement in their school work, discipline, or are just model students always.  This week's student of the week is  Kenya Thorne nominated by Mrs. Freemon.
