American Chemical Society sponsor a
chemistry exam competition for schools in
northeast Mississippi, northwest Alabama, and
south-central Tennessee. First-year and
second-year chemistry students are eligible to
compete. This year over 700 students competed
from this region. Jack Smith and Sam Spearman
tied for highest school score. Additionally,
Jack and Sam tied for second place for the
highest overall score. They both won $200 and
gifts from the chemistry department and the
American Chemical Society. Oliver Irvine won
third place for the highest overall score. He
won $100 and gifts from the chemistry
department and the American Chemical Society.
Additionally, our students scored very well
overall. The average score for all schools was
17.5. Our school average was 20.5. Over 100 of
our combined chemistry students scored at
or above the mean score. Of the remaining
students all but 3 were within 3 points of the
average.
Marilyn Williams, teacher of these
students, was named chemistry teacher of the
year by the American Chemical Society at this
